About Johan Cruyff
Born Hendrik Johannes Cruijff in Amsterdam in 1947, Hendrik eventually became more popularly known as Johan Cruyff.
Cruyff became a famous professional footballer in part to his passing skills and power in the centre position on the field. He often dropped back or moved forward unexpectedly to confuse his opponents, giving him the advantage. Experts heralded Cruyff for his speed and precise movements, especially in what is now known as a Cruyff Turn, in which the player drags the ball with one foot behind the other foot, turns around and move away from the attacker.
Over time, Cruyff played for FC Barcelona, Ajax, the Washington Diplomats, the LA Aztecs, Feyenoord and Levante UD.
Cruyff won the Ballon d’Or in 1971, 1973 and 1974 and named the European Player of the Century in 1999 by the IFFHS and was the second highest on the World Player of the Century list.
Since he retired from professional football, Cruyff has gone on to manage several professional teams, such as the Catalan national team and others.
